confine, imprison, jail

這些動(dòng)詞均含“監(jiān)禁”之意。

confine : 指監(jiān)禁或幽禁；也指任何使行動(dòng)受到限制的行為。

They confined the prisoner in a cell.（他們把犯人監(jiān)禁在監(jiān)獄里。）

imprison : 較正式用詞，多指較長(zhǎng)時(shí)間的監(jiān)禁。

They imprisoned many of those they caught.（他們把抓來的許多人關(guān)入了監(jiān)獄。）

jail : (英國(guó)用gaol)多指審判之間的拘禁或?qū)ψ镄休^輕的罪犯的監(jiān)禁。

Due to a police mix up, the robber go free and the victim is jailed.(由於警察搞混了,小偷逃逸而受害者卻入獄了。_

confirm, verify

這兩個(gè)動(dòng)詞都有“證實(shí)”之意。

confirm : 側(cè)重以事實(shí)或以不容置疑的陳述來證實(shí)某事的正確與真實(shí)。

We have confirmed the report.(我們證實(shí)了那則報(bào)道。)

verify : 強(qiáng)調(diào)以具體的事實(shí)和細(xì)節(jié)為證據(jù)。

Subsequent events verified that his judgement was at fault.(接著發(fā)生的事件證實(shí)了他的判斷有誤。)
