I didn't know very much about it. It was only when he had produced his policy that he showed it to me. But his arguments were convincing and I had to listen to what he was saying. And what was he saying? That we could save money by cutting the amount of waste we produced. Well, it sounds easy in theory, but how did you decide where to cut waste? We brought in a company to assess our work procedures. That was in 2005. Then we asked them back in 2006 and again in 2007. The first report the company produced explained how we could reduce water consumption, use paper more carefully and cut photocopying, electricity and heating costs. We followed their suggestions, and in the first year, we were able to cut our energy bills by 17%. That is a lot. Yes, but the biggest difference was in the amount of solid waste. We used to produce over 40 tonnes a year, and this has fallen to less than 30 tonnes.
