1.四月齋——Lent

復活節(jié)前40天有一個大齋期稱為四月齋（Lent），是從基督教的圣灰星期三（Ash Wednesday）起至復活節(jié)前一天為止的40天，這主要是為了紀念耶酥在荒野禁食40天而絕食或懺悔。大齋期為信徒們提供了贖罪（penance）、齋戒（fasting）、自制（self-denial）和懺悔（repentance）的機會，要求信徒們滌凈過去一年中的劣行與罪過。

有關四月齋名字的由來，我們來看一下這段話：

In Latin the term quadragesima (translation of the original Greek tessarakoste, the "fortieth day" before Easter) is used. This nomenclature is preserved in Romance, Slavic and Celtic languages.?In the late Middle Ages, as sermons began to be given in the vernacular instead of Latin, the English word lent was adopted. This word initially simply meant spring (as in German language Lenz and Dutch lente) and derives from the Germanic root for long because in the spring the days visibly lengthen.

可見，起初“四月齋”的名稱是用拉丁語說的。但是到了中世紀后半葉，教會的布道便不使用拉丁語了，由此英語“l(fā)ent”被采用。在最初，“l(fā)ent”這個詞僅僅是表示春天而已。從詞根來說，起源于日耳曼語中“長”的意思，因為春天里白天的時間明顯變長了。

2.復活節(jié)——Easter?

復活節(jié)是基督教紀念耶穌復活的節(jié)日。傳說耶穌被釘死在十字架上，死后第三天復活升天。每年在教堂慶祝的復活節(jié)指的是春分月圓后的第一個星期日，如果月圓那天剛好是星期天，復活節(jié)則推遲一星期。因而復活節(jié)可能在3月22日至4月25日之間的任何一天。?

我們來看這一句話：Easter, anniversary of the Resurrection of Christ, observed on the first Sunday after a full moon on or after 21 March.（忍不住感嘆一下，復活節(jié)的日期居然是由三個歷法——西歷、中國陰歷、星期合并出來的，怪不得如此飄忽不定了?。?/p>

為什么“復活節(jié)”的英文是“Easter”？

專家學者看法各不相同。比較普遍的一種說法是：Easter's name comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, associated with spring and fertility, and celebrated around the vernal equinox.??

復活節(jié)的名字來源于盎格魯-撒克遜的春之女神——Eostre。原意是指冬日逝去后，春天(spring)的太陽從東方(east)升起，把新生命帶回。由于該詞喻意新生，于是被基督教教徒借用過來表示生命、光明、歡樂的恩賜者耶穌再次回到人間。

3.復活節(jié)兔子——Easter Bunny / Easter Hare

女神Eostre發(fā)現(xiàn)一只冬天里受傷的小鳥，就把它變成一只野兔，這樣它可以熬過寒冬。不過這只兔子發(fā)現(xiàn)自己可以下蛋。于是就把自己的蛋畫上漂亮的圖案，每年獻給救命恩人Esotre女神作為謝禮。現(xiàn)在的復活節(jié)彩蛋就是這么而來的。

這里要注意的是，“復活節(jié)兔子”中“兔子”的翻譯需要是“hare”（野兔）。而“Bunny”多數(shù)是孩子的用語。為什么不可以是“rabbit”呢？

首先我們來看這一段話：

The Easter bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season.

依據(jù)歐洲古老的傳說，野兔是一種終日不閉眼的動物，它們能在黑夜里，觀看四周其它的動物，因此，野兔就代表著那黑夜中一輪皎潔的明月。再加上復活節(jié)日子的計算是以春天月圓為基準，于是就將春天繁殖力強的野兔視為復活節(jié)的一個象征。
