Pink Floyd樂(lè)隊(duì)創(chuàng)作這首歌是為了獻(xiàn)給離隊(duì)已久的重要成員Syd Barret,Syd Barret由于濫用藥物而出現(xiàn)了精神問(wèn)題。在Pink Floyd錄制該張專輯時(shí),Syd Barret甚至還有到訪,但是他的容貌發(fā)生了巨大改變以至于隊(duì)友們一開(kāi)始都沒(méi)認(rèn)出他。整張專輯包括"Wish you were here"這首歌都唱出了樂(lè)隊(duì)的失落,感嘆他們已經(jīng)不如往昔那么親密。
歌詞中兩個(gè)主要的隱喻是"we're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year"和"did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?"。
Babette 老師感覺(jué)這首歌是對(duì)ideal life和contemporary society的思考。歌曲一開(kāi)始問(wèn)道:我們是否真的知道what makes us happy?我們是否真的能夠區(qū)分Heaven與Hell、pleasure與pain?我們是否出賣了ideas和dreams,用來(lái)?yè)Q取得到 modernity, technology, 或money的承諾?這些承諾真的有意義嗎?比方說(shuō),我們是否放棄了童年時(shí)代心中的英雄形象而投身魔鬼,是否犧牲了最基本的安逸生活只為換得一把金錢?我們是想成為良好社會(huì)中不起眼的一員,還是想成為一個(gè)有身份的奴隸?最后幾句歌詞唱出了人與人之間親切感的喪失:我們?yōu)楹螘?huì)感覺(jué)自己生活在一個(gè)魚(yú)缸般的小世界中獨(dú)自失落,為何會(huì)反反復(fù)復(fù)問(wèn)著同樣的問(wèn)題卻始終得不到答案……
