Beijing National Stadium ( the Bird’s Nest) is the centerpiece of the Olympic Green in Beijing. The stadium was designed for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The Bird’s Nest, with an area of 258,000 square meters, has room for 91,000 spectators. Ground was broken in December 2003 and the stadium officially opened in June 2008. Beijing National Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athletic events, and the football final of the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Though designed for track and field events of the Olympics, the stadium will continue to host sports events, such as football, afterwards. It is one of the most important public space in Beijing and the iconic sports architecture.
