This Day in History - Aug 15th Starring - The Berlin Wall

The division of post-war Germany into 4 Allied occupation zones left Berlin lying in the middle of the Soviet zone, yet still divided between east and west. Tensions rose immediately after soldiers settled in. Particularly as most transportation from Western Europe to Berlin, had to travel through Soviet controlled territory. The Berlin Airlift became a neccessity in 1948 when the Soviets blockaded ground and water routes to and from Berlin. Although the airlift was successful and the blockade was lifted, tensioned continued. Particularly as East Germans poured into West Berlin. In 1961, East Germany put up the Berlin Wall, partially splitting the city in two, until it was torn down in 1989. ?
