We'll trash you later

We'll trash you later

她說(shuō):“You're right. We'll trash you later.(算你贏,待會(huì)再來(lái)?yè)p你好了。)”

這里動(dòng)詞“損”用了“trash”,意為“to criticize sth/sb very strong”,即“猛烈抨擊,強(qiáng)烈譴責(zé)”。

There are some staff in every company that like to trash talk their boss.

谷哥告訴我們:“Trash-talk is a form of insult commonly heard in sports events. It is often used to intimidate the opposition”,原來(lái)它是一種損人的方式,通常用在運(yùn)動(dòng)場(chǎng)上,功力是擾亂敵方軍心。

他曾在比賽時(shí)向?qū)κ痔翎叄骸癐'll give you a jump shot, right here. Go ahead, take it. You don't want it?!(我就讓你跳投,就在這兒,你跳啊,投啊,怎么,又不要了?!)”

Wake-up call

Wake-up call

她悲嘆:“That $1.47 tip was a wake-up call reminding me that life will always undervalue you if you let it.(那一塊四毛七宛如警世鐘,點(diǎn)醒我,如果聽(tīng)之任之,人生就總會(huì)低估你的價(jià)值。)”

Wake up call可引申為“一記警鐘”,句型有something is a wake up call for somebody,表示某件事讓某人驚覺(jué)了、敲警鐘了。

大徹大悟后決定重新做人,于是說(shuō):“The final exam is a wake-up call for me. I should keep on studying hard, or I might be kicked out of school.”

Churn out

Churn out

Caroline決定給未來(lái)的蛋糕小店取名為“Max's Homemade Cupcakes(Max自制紙杯蛋糕)”,Max卻覺(jué)得此名字太山寨,她說(shuō):“Like we are churning out cupcakes.”

它指“produce sth quickly and in large amounts”,即“大量生產(chǎn),尤指粗制濫造地大量炮制”。

The amateur writer has been churning out online novels at the rate of 10, 000 words per day.(這個(gè)業(yè)余寫手一直以一天1萬(wàn)字的速度粗制濫造網(wǎng)絡(luò)小說(shuō)。)

Many diploma mills churn out so-called certificates and cash in on Chinese students.(許多野雞大學(xué)大量制造所謂的文憑,利用中國(guó)留學(xué)生來(lái)斂財(cái)。)

Shove them down people's throats

Shove them down people's throats

Max認(rèn)為這種節(jié)目是在“shove them down people's throats”。

Shove意為“猛推”,shove sth down one's throat是一則片語(yǔ)。 變體有ram sth down one's throat或者force sth down one's throat,意思均差不多。

如果你要拒絕三天兩頭來(lái)“拜訪”你的賣保險(xiǎn)的人,就可以說(shuō):I don't want any more insurance, and I don't want anyone to shove any insurance down my throat.(我不要保險(xiǎn),不要來(lái)死命推銷逼我買下。)

索尼公司的北美總裁Tretton就比較得體,他在一次發(fā)布會(huì)上曾說(shuō):“Never try to shove something down a consumer's throat that they don't have an appetite for.

music career derailed

music career derailed

小餐館里的收帳員Earl大叔曾是個(gè)重口味的文藝青年,在Caroline的口中,his music career derailed due to a heroin addiction(他曾因沉迷毒品葬送了自己的音樂(lè)事業(yè))。

Two high-speed trains collided and derailed each other.(兩輛高速列車沖撞并導(dǎo)致互相脫軌。)

Joining the army means their career will derail for two years and possibly forever。

Be addicted to sth指“對(duì)…… The little boy is addicted to computer games.(這個(gè)小男孩對(duì)電腦游戲著了迷。)

Hammer out

Hammer out

My team finally hammered out a scheme after some sleepless nights and repeated modifications.

Hammer out也常用于報(bào)刊語(yǔ)言中,如“A summit in Copenhagen at the end of the year is supposed to hammer out a post-Kyoto agreement to cut greenhouse gases.(年底在哥本哈根舉行的峰會(huì)就是要討論簽訂一個(gè)“后京都議定書(shū)協(xié)定”,來(lái)減少溫室氣體的排放)?!?/p>
