On June 30, 1981, Menachem Begin was re-elected Prime Minister.
Many were surprised when Menachem Begin was first elected Premier of Israel. The opposition Labor Party had ruled Israel through the first 29 years of its existence. Begin's Likud Party had always been hawkish toward any possible compromise with the Arabs. Yet it was Begin who signed the historic peace treaty with Egypt's Anwar Sadat. This was the same Begin whose guerillas had bombed British headquarters in 1946, killing 90 people and who had gone to jail and escaped. In 1983, Israel invaded Lebanon. Its prolonged involvement there created a political crisis at home. Menachem Begin, weary and melancholy over the death of his wife suddenly resigned. The happier days - only a memory.
