This Day in History
March 24, 1949 - John and Walter Huston win Oscars

In the latter decades of his career, films such as the MacIntosh Man did not always bring the kind of critical acclaim for John Huston as had most of the films he directed as a younger man in the 1940s. Through 5 decades, the independent minded Huston simply filmed stories that interested him, from action oriented thrillers and detective gems such as The Maltese Falcon , to big budget busts such as Moby Dick and The Bible. Huston was above all an adventurer, as exemplified by his The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The story of two gold prospectors in Mexico co-starred his father, Walter Huston, who won a best-supporting actor Oscar at the same time that John won Oscars for best director and best screenplay on March 24, 1949.
