On my first day as Secretary-General of the United Nations, one question weighs heavily on my heart.
今天是我擔任聯(lián)合國秘書長的第一天。有一個問題沉重地壓在我的心頭。

How can we help the millions of people caught up in conflict, suffering massively in wars with no end in sight?
數(shù)百萬民眾身陷沖突，在看不到盡頭的戰(zhàn)爭中飽受苦難。我們怎樣才能去幫助他們？

Civilians are pounded with deadly force. Women, children and men are killed and injured, forced from their homes, dispossessed and destitute. Even hospitals and aid convoys are targeted.
平民遭受致命攻擊。男女婦孺，死傷慘重，他們背井離鄉(xiāng)，一無所有，一貧如洗。連醫(yī)院和援助車隊，也成為攻擊目標。

No one wins these wars, everyone loses. Trillions of dollars are spent destroying societies and economies, fueling cycles of mistrust and fear that can last for generations. And whole regions are destabilized and the new threat of global terrorism affects us all.
在這些戰(zhàn)爭中，沒有贏家，人人皆輸。數(shù)萬億美元被耗費，社會和經(jīng)濟遭到破壞，不信任和恐懼惡性循環(huán)，愈演愈烈。這種不信任和恐懼會讓數(shù)代人揮之不去。一個個地區(qū)整個陷入動蕩，而全球恐怖主義這一新威脅影響到所有人。

On this New Year’s Day, I ask all of you to join me in making one shared New Year’s resolution: Let us resolve to put peace first.
值此元旦之際，我請所有人和我一起，共同下定一個新年決心：讓我們決心把和平擺在首位。

Let us make 2017 a year in which we all – citizens, governments, leaders – strive to overcome our differences.
讓我們大家，不論是公民、政府、還是領導人，努力使2017年成為克服彼此分歧的一年。

From solidarity and compassion in our daily lives, to dialogue and respect across political divides…
無論在日常生活中展現(xiàn)團結精神和同情之心，還是超越政治分歧開展對話、相互尊重……

From ceasefires on the battlefield, to compromise at the negotiating table to reach political solutions…
無論是在戰(zhàn)場上實現(xiàn)?；?，還是在談判桌上為實現(xiàn)政治解決而達成妥協(xié)……

Peace must be our goal and our guide.
和平必須是我們的目標，我們的指針。

And all that we strive for as a human family – dignity and hope, progress and prosperity – depends on peace.
尊嚴和希望、進步和繁榮，這些都是我們?nèi)祟惔蠹彝^力實現(xiàn)的目標，它們都取決于和平。

But peace depends on us.
而和平要靠我們?nèi)崿F(xiàn)。

I appeal to you all to join me in committing to peace, today and every day.
我呼吁大家和我一起，在今天，在每一天，都致力于和平。

Let us make 2017 a year for peace.
讓我們使2017年成為和平之年。
