President Barack Obama says the war in Afghanistan will get worse before it gets better, but the US remains on track to start withdrawing troops next year. Obama met with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai at the White House Wednesday.

Congressional investigators are learning more about what may have led to the rig explosion and sent oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. They say a key safety device called a blowout preventer had a hydraulic leak and other problems that probably kept it from working properly.

Dutch officials say this boy is the only known survivor of a Libyan plane crash. A flight from South Africa crashed on approach to Tripoli airport Wednesday morning, killing 103 people. The boy is undergoing surgeries for injuries including broken bones.

A 22-year-old man may be facing jail time after pretending to be a high school basketball player. Officials say he led a Texas school to the state play-offs last season, suspicions about his identity arose at an amateur tournament last month.
