This Day in History - July 10th Starring - Allies Invade Sicily

The Allied invasion of Sicily took months of preparation before British and American forces sailed jointly from Malta and Tunisia to attack Sicily's southern shores. For months, the Allies had managed to keep Germany and Italy guessing as to what part of Sicily would be attacked or whether the assault on southern Europe might be launched instead on Greece, or Yugoslavia, or southern France. A week of heavy aerial bombing and naval fire helped weaken the resistance of German troops and war weary Italian soldiers. On July 10, 1943, British forces under General Montgomery landed on the southeast corner of Sicily, while the American 7th Army under General Patton landed on the southern coast. General Eisenhower called the landing the first page in the liberation of the Europeon continent.
