Hugh Laurie is getting serious about the blues. The British House star announced today via press release that he’s signed with Warner Music Entertainment to release a New Orleans blues album that he plans to spend the rest of the summer and fall recording. Folk-rocker Joe Henry will produce, and several musical collaborators yet to be named are expected to join in the sessions.

The announcement can’t come as too much of a surprise to regular viewers of Fox’s House, where the cantankerous doctor played by Laurie has frequently shown off his piano and guitar talents. Laurie shares his character’s skills in real life; he is “predominantly self-taught (after creative differences with his childhood teacher),” according to the press release. “I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity,” he adds in the same release. “I know the history of actors making music is a checkered one, but I promise no one will get hurt.”
