This Day in History - Aug 21st Starring - Jomo Kenyatta

In the early 1950's, British troops crushed the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya and held more than 80,000 captives. Many were later released, including Jomo Kenyatta on August 21st, 1961. Two years later, the 73-year old Kenyatta was elected Kenya's first Prime Minister. One year after that, his nation gained complete independence from Britain and became a republic. Kenyatta had served a nine year term after being convicted by British authorities of managing the Mau Mau. The British also accused him of being Communist and anti-white, charges he denied. Kenyatta became a potent symbol for other African nationalist leaders during the 1960s, when so many new African republics were established. ?
