This Day in History - Aug 30th Starring - Hot Line

August 30, 1963 - in a one sentence press statement, the U.S. Defense Department declares the direct communications link between Washington and Moscow is now operational. The direct communications link was better known as the “Hot Line“, a teletype line from machines in the Pentagon to a facility near the offices of Premier Khrushchev in the Kremlin. The messages, to be used only in times of emergency, between the heads of government would be carefully coded to prevent interception. The 7,100 mile communications link was established as a safety precaution against nuclear war after communication delays hindered negotiations between Premier Khrushchev and President Kennedy in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
