August 31, 1889 - Edison invents the Kinetoscope.

Thomas Edison helped advance much technology for the 20th Century including motion pictures. His taw papered Black Maria, which was operating by 1894 in West Orange, New Jersey, is regarded as the first movie studio. It employed the kinetoscope, an Edison invention that ran film in a continuous movement between a magnifying lens and light source. Since images were viewed through the kinetoscope, the problem of showing them on a screen was not dealt with by Edison. In 1895, projectors were developed, much against Edison's insistance that the motion picture patent was his alone. Had his long legal battle succeeded, audiences might have been limited to watching Thomas Edison productions of Black Maria rather than movies all over the world.
