歷史回顧:世界第一艘核潛艇“鸚鵡螺”號大顯身手(視頻)
September 21st, 1954 - US Nautilus launched.
The U.S. submarine Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered vessel, was launched in 1954 after eight years of planning. The 340-foot submarine cost $55 million to build and was capable of cruising around the world without surfacing, because its atomic engine required no air. With a top speed of 30 knots, the Nautilus could move faster underwater than all but the very swiftest vessels on the surface. Admiral Hyman G. Rickover played the key role in the development of the submarine. The Nautilus made further headlines when it became the first vessel to sail under the North Pole in 1958. It also was the forerunner of later nuclear submarines such as the Trident, which carries an awesome arsenal of long range nuclear missiles.
