afraid, fearful, awful, dreadful, frightful, terrible, horrible, terrific, appalling

這些形容詞均含“害怕的、可怕的”之意。

1. afraid ：指由于膽小或怯懦而不敢說(shuō)或做某事。

I am afraid I can't help you（恐怕我?guī)筒涣四?。?/p>

2. fearful ：普通用詞，既指外界情況變化而引起的恐懼，又指來(lái)自內(nèi)心的害怕與焦慮。

I have ever witnessed a fearful accident.（我曾目睹一場(chǎng)可怕的事故。）

3. awful ：指威嚴(yán)得令人害怕或敬畏，有一定的感情色彩。

The weather is awful today.（今天天氣壞透了。）

4. dreadful ：指使人非?？謶郑倾と?，也使人感到討厭而退縮。

He told me a dreadful story.（他給我講了一個(gè)可怕的故事。）

5. frightful ：指使人陷入短暫的驚恐或產(chǎn)生毛骨悚然的感覺(jué)。

It was with the greatest difficulty that the boy gathered the strength to speak, but spoke with a frightful emphasis.

6. terrible ：側(cè)重指給人以長(zhǎng)久的驚駭，極端的恐怖，令人難以忍受。

The little boy is playing the terrible game.（那小男孩正在玩恐怖的游戲。）

7. horrible ：指因駭人聽(tīng)聞的丑惡而令人毛骨悚然，著重厭惡的成分多于害怕。

The decision they made was horrible.（他們做出的決定令人感到恐怖。）

8. terrific ：多指外表、形狀或力量等的可怕。

This movie relates that a hero defeats a monster with a terrific figure by himself.（這部電影講述的是一位英雄獨(dú)自打敗一個(gè)外形可怕的怪獸的故事。）

小編語(yǔ)：偶覺(jué)得terrific這個(gè)詞還是用“極好的，非常棒的”比較多一點(diǎn)~

9. appalling ：指既令害怕又使人驚異、膽寒。

The Halloween masks are very appalling.（萬(wàn)圣節(jié)的面具可真夠嚇人的。）
