The president and lawmakers from both parties are looking to strike a deal before year's end on which tax cuts to keep and for how long.
A Pentagon study on gays in the millitary finds that overturning"don't ask, don't tell" would not create widespread or long-lasting problems. That outcome provides ammunition to Democrats but they still face an uphill battle to banish the law in this post-election session of Congress.
