Harry felt, afterward, that he should have known it was all too good to last.

After lunch they went to the reptile house. It was cool and dark in there, with lit windows all along the walls. Behind the glass, all sorts of lizards and snakes were crawling and slithering over bits of wood and stone. Dudley and Piers wanted to see huge, poisonous cobras and thick, man-crushing pythons. Dudley quickly found the largest snake in the place. It could have wrapped its body twice around Uncle Vernon's car and crushed it into a trash can — but at the moment it didn't look in the mood. In fact, it was fast asleep.

Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass, staring at the glistening brown coils.

"Make it move," he whined at his father. Uncle Vernon tapped on the glass, but the snake didn't budge.

"Do it again," Dudley ordered. Uncle Vernon rapped the glass smartly with his knuckles, but the snake just snoozed on.

"This is boring," Dudley moaned. He shuffled away.

吃過(guò)午飯，他們來(lái)到爬蟲(chóng)館。館里陰冷、晦暗，沿四面墻都是明亮的玻璃窗。隔著玻璃只見(jiàn)各色蜥蜴和蛇在木塊上或石塊上爬來(lái)爬去，溜溜達(dá)達(dá)。達(dá)力和皮爾想看看有劇毒的大眼鏡蛇和攻擊性很強(qiáng)的巨蟒。達(dá)力很快就找到了館里最大的一條巨蟒。它能用它的身體纏繞弗農(nóng)姨父的汽車兩圈，然后把它擠壓成一堆廢鐵……不過(guò)這時(shí)看來(lái)它并沒(méi)有這種心思，它睡得正香呢。

達(dá)力用鼻子緊貼著玻璃盯著這盤(pán)亮閃閃的棕色巨蟒。

“讓它動(dòng)呀?！边_(dá)力哼哼唧唧地央求他父親。弗農(nóng)姨父敲了敲玻璃，巨蟒卻紋絲不動(dòng)。

“再敲一遍。”達(dá)力命令說(shuō)。弗農(nóng)姨父用指節(jié)狠狠地敲玻璃，可大蟒繼續(xù)打盹。

“真煩人?！边_(dá)力抱怨了一句，拖著腳慢慢吞吞地走開(kāi)了。

主要知識(shí)點(diǎn)：

1. too good to last:

too…to這個(gè)詞組不少人都比較熟悉，表示的是“太……以至于（不能）……”的意思。
在“too good to last”中，也同樣是用它的這個(gè)意思，直譯為“太過(guò)于美好以至于無(wú)法長(zhǎng)久”。具體應(yīng)該怎么說(shuō)才順口，還需要我們?cè)诰唧w語(yǔ)境中體會(huì)啦。比如說(shuō)：
It was too good to last.（美好的一切總是那么短暫。）

2. be in the mood：

最常見(jiàn)的搭配是“be in the mood for sth”以及“be in the mood to do sth”，表示“有心情做某事”的意思。
比如說(shuō)：I'm just in the mood for a movie right now.（只是我現(xiàn)在很想看場(chǎng)電影。）

3. snooze：

“snooze”的意思是“小睡（尤指白天）；打盹”。比如說(shuō)：
Dad was snoozing by the fire.（爸爸正在爐火旁打盹。）
另外在鬧鐘上還有一個(gè)按鈕叫做“snooze button”，也就是拍一下它過(guò)個(gè)五分鐘十分鐘就會(huì)再響，讓你多賴一會(huì)兒床。

4. shuffle:

“shuffle”作為動(dòng)詞指的是“拖著腳步走”，比如說(shuō)：
The queue shuffled forward slowly.（排長(zhǎng)隊(duì)的人拖著腳步往前蹭。）
此外，“shuffle”還可以指“洗牌”哦，比如說(shuō)：Who is going to shuffle?（誰(shuí)洗牌？）
