　　A problem that frustrates working adults is the time wasted on their way to work, with conflicting views on how to tackle this issue. Some people believe that the best solution is to replace the gardens and parks in downtown with apartments,so that working people can live closer to the business center. To me, I do not regard it as a good idea when considering its detrimental effects on environment.

　　It is easy to understand why this suggestion is crowned as a panacea. Those who harbor this proposal attribute the long travelling hours to the city planning of modern metropolises, where many residential areas are located in suburb, resulting inthe fact that the residents have to spend much time on commuting between home and workplaces. In this respect, if the government demolished public green pacein downtown to accommodate more working population, it would shorten their distance to offices to a large extent.

　　Plausible though the proposal seems, I would stand by those opponents, who attach more importance to the potential air pollution that will ensue. What is ignored by those opt to remove green land is that it is the trees in those gardens and parks that generate oxygen, absorb greenhouse gas emissions. Were it not for these oases,the air quality of our cities would deteriorate, and the resulting public health problems would far outweigh the superficial convenience in travelling. In response to this, other alternatives need to be taken into consideration. For example, the Internet will have its role to play. With e-communication tools like video conferencing, it is possible for people to deal with business at home rather than punching in every morning in the office.

　　In conclusion, I would reiterate that removing gardens and parks is not the silver bullet to reduce the commuting time of working people.
