Deficit = de-（離開，非，使相反）+ -fic-（做，作）+ -it（名詞后綴），即沒做好，引申詞義“出現(xiàn)赤字、虧損”。

在商業(yè)領(lǐng)域里，deficit常見的詞組短語有budget deficit預(yù)算赤字、trade deficit貿(mào)易逆差、fiscal deficit財政赤字、federal deficit聯(lián)邦赤字、foreign trade deficit對外貿(mào)易逆差、cash deficit現(xiàn)金短缺。

Deficit同近義詞red ink，中文字面意思是紅墨水，但在經(jīng)濟領(lǐng)域取其比喻義，即“赤字、虧損”。因為在西方國家，紅色代表災(zāi)難、不吉利，虧損是不好的，所以用紅色來表示下跌、虧損。在商務(wù)英語中，in the red也表示“負(fù)債、虧損、赤字”，而in the black則表示“盈利、有盈余”。
