A blaze at a thousand year-old temple in Fujian Province early Monday is now under investigation. Despite being put out in one hour, the historical site still suffered considerable damage. Authorities are now trying to determine how many items at the Fahai Buddhist Temple were damaged.

As the investigation continues, visitors are barred and Buddhist events at the temple have been cancelled. Authorities say many statues of Buddha were damaged in the grand hall but ancient scriptures appear to be unharmed. The fire started at around 3am Monday morning and ravaged 400 square meters of the injuries were reported. The temple was built in 945 AD and is home many ancient Buddhist scriptures and other national treasures.
