The first wedding to take place at the abbey was that of King Henry I of England and Princess Matilda of Scotland in 1100. Many traditions — for the groom to don a military uniform, for the bride’s flowers to include a sprig of myrtle signifying love and for the couple to sign the wedding register in the privacy of Edward the Confessor’s Chapel — have been added in the years since.
Edmund
This wedding was the first to take place in the abbey that stands today, which had been rebuilt by the groom’s father, King Henry III, in the Gothic style. The couple’s honeymoon didn’t last long. The prince, known as Edmund Crouchback, went on a crusade within a year and Avelina died, childless, just five years later.
Gilbert de Clare
The daughter of King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castile, Joan was 18 when she married the 46-year-old earl. After five years and four children, Gilbert died. Joan soon fell in love with and secretly married Ralph de Monthermer, a squire in the household of her late husband. Her father threw the man in prison, but later released him.
King Richard II
Pope Urban VI arranged this marriage between the young king and the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. The couple were only 15 at the time of their wedding.
Cmdr. Alexander Ramsay

The granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the cousin of King George V, Patricia ushered in the new fashion of royals marrying at the abbey. Deciding to wed a commoner, she gave up her royal title and became Lady Patricia Ramsay.
Prince Albert
The bride, who first met the royal prince as a child, refused his first two proposals as she was wary of public life and worried about his moodiness and pronounced stammer. The future King George VI, the subject of the movie “The King’s Speech,” was the first groom to marry in the uniform of the Royal Air Force.
Princess Elizabeth
The future Queen Elizabeth II was 21 when she married the 26-year-old Lt. Philip Mountbatten, who had renounced his royal title of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark months before the wedding to become a British subject. Hours before the wedding he was styled His Royal Highness and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Andrew
Five hundred million people watched this grand wedding on television, and guests included Elton John, Estée Lauder and Michael Caine.? The couple, who have two children, announced their separation less than six years later.
Prince William
Prince William and Kate Middleton are to marry at Westminster Abbey in April 29th.
