INTRODUCTION

№.1 -?To understand an age or a nation, we must understand its philosophy, and to understand its philosophy we must ourselves be in some degree philosophers. There is here a reciprocal causation: the circumstances of men's lives do much to determine their philosophy, but, conversely, their philosophy does much to determine their circumstances. This interaction throughout the centuries will be the topic of the following pages.

【短語筆記】do much to/for - 對(duì) ...

【舉一反三】do much toward doing ... 或者 do much for sth.

(1)The secretary general do much to ease the tension in the area.(秘書長(zhǎng)對(duì)緩和那個(gè)地區(qū)的緊張局勢(shì)做了很多工作。)

(2)One dead photographer does not do much for the cause he cares about, even if he did feel compelled to weigh in and take sides.

(3)We could do much toward alleviating our problems in this country by the elimination crime, which can be accomplished quite painlessly by simply eliminating traceless paper currency and going to an all-electronic system as many Americans have already done so.

№.2?-?Uncertainty, in the presence of vivid hopes and fears, is painful, but must be endured if we wish to live without the support of comforting fairy tales. It is not good either to forget the questions that philosophy asks, or to persuade ourselves that we have found indubitable answers to them. To teach how to live without certainty, and yet without being?paralyzed?by hesitation, is perhaps the chief thing that philosophy, in our age, can still do for those who study it.?

【短語筆記】either to ... or to ...

對(duì)應(yīng)地,請(qǐng)大家記住這個(gè)用法:neither to ... or to ... 當(dāng)neither...nor...

(1)Developers can choose either to build from scratch or use existing structures or even simply clear off flat land and start parking rows of densely-packed data center containers.

(2)In a position like this one can neither stand up nor lie down.(處在這樣的位置,一個(gè)人既不能站直,也不能躺倒。)

№.3?-?During this long period, the Greek ideas inherited from the age of freedom underwent a gradual process of transformation. Some of the old ideas, notably those which we should regard as specifically religious, gained in relative importance; others, more rationalistic, were discarded because they no longer suited the spirit of the age. In this way the later pagans trimmed the Greek tradition until it became suitable for incorporation in Christian doctrine.

【舉一反三】gain ground - 前進(jìn),進(jìn)步,進(jìn)展;gain on - 趕上,追上;gain over - 把 ...

(1)No practice, no gain in one's wit.(紙上得來終覺淺,要知此事須躬行。)

(2)The fierce campaign by several anti-Maastricht movements has been gaining ground.

(3)As he slithered across the mud I gained on him.

(4)The Kuomintang won a resounding victory, gaining over 70 percent of votes cast.

№.4?-?What had happened in the great age of Greece happened again in Renaissance Italy: traditional moral restraints disappeared, because they were seen to be associated with superstition; the liberation from fetters made individuals energetic and creative, producing a rare florescence of genius; but the anarchy and treachery which inevitably resulted from the decay of morals made Italians collectively impotent, and they fell, like the Greeks, under the domination of nations less civilized than themselves but not so destitute of social cohesion.

(1)Soil damage can result from flooding, the effects of chemicals, or the removal of nutrients that help plants grow.(洪水、化學(xué)品的影響,以及植物生長(zhǎng)所需營(yíng)養(yǎng)的流失都會(huì)對(duì)土地造成傷害。)

(2)In the Middle Ages, wealth sprang largely from the land.

№.5?-?Social cohesion is a necessity, and mankind has never yet succeeded in enforcing cohesion by merely rational arguments. Every community is exposed to two opposite dangers: ossification through too much discipline and reverence for tradition, on the one hand; on the other hand, dissolution, or subjection to foreign conquest, through the growth of an individualism and personal independence that makes co-operation impossible.

A company that fail to reinvent products according to customers' needs probably cannot succeed in business.
