There are at least five dead and more hurt after a series of attacks in southern Israel. Israeli officials say gunmen had attacked a passenger bus and a car and explosion targeting Israeli soldiers was also reported.

The Obama Administration may formally call for Syrian President Bashar al Assad to step down today. The speculation comes as a UN panel says the crackdown in Syria may amount to crimes against humanity. He should be looked at by the international criminal court. Meanwhile, at least nine people were reportedly killed overnight in the city of Hama.

A frequent contributor to a jihadist website has threatened David Letterman. In an online posting, he urges Muslim followers to cut the tongue of the Late Night host because of a joke he made on his show. A spokesman for the FBI office in New York says it is looking into the threat.

And hundreds of pilgrims came out to welcome Pope Benedict XVI to Spain. The pontifex is kicking off a four-day trip to Madrid for World Youth Day. A million or more young people are expecting in the capital this week.
