United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has issued as statement, saying "all sides must lay down their arms in peace."
"This day marks a historic transition for Libya. In the coming days, we will witness scenes of celebration, as well as grief for those who lost so much. Yet let us recognize, immediately, that this is only the end of the beginning. The road ahead for Libya and its people will be difficult and full of challenges. Now is the time for all Libyans to come together. Libyans can only realize the promise of the future through national unity and reconciliation."
Ban is also pledging UN support to Libya's transitional authorities as they move now toward trying to rebuild their country.
In Washington, US President Barack Obama has cast the demise of Moammar Gadhafi as a momentous opportunity for Libya.
"This marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the people of Libya who now have the opportunity to determine their own destiny in a new and democratic Libya.…Libya will travel a long and winding road to full democracy. There will be difficult days ahead. But the United States, together with the international community is committed to the Libyan people."
Obama also says that the NATO mission in Libya is going to come to an end soon.
Meanwhile, Across the Atlantic, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is calling on the NTC in Libya to make democracy a priority.
"What I hope now is that today people of Libya can embrace freedom, building a new democratic future. That is why we are calling on the National Transitional Council to pursue a broad based reconciliation process that can reach to Libyans and enable a democratic and peaceful transition in this country."
At the same time, France, the first country to recognise the NTC as Libya's legitimate government, says it is proud of the role of French forces have played in Libya.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.
"France, with other countries, is ready to support the efforts of the NTC in implementing its political roadmap and in developing the activity of the Libyan economy. So, it is a new period, which is starting now. France is proud to have helped the Libyan people to be conquering its freedom."
UK Prime Minister David Cameron says he wants people to take time to remember Gaddafi's victims.
"I think today is a day to remember all of Colonel Gaddafi's victims. From those who died in connection with the Pan-Am flight over Lockerbie, to Yvonne Fletcher in a London street, and obviously all the victims of IRA terrorism who died through their use of Libyan Semtex. We should also remember the many many Libyans who died at the hands of this brutal dictator and his regime."
And in Moscow, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says he hopes the end of the hunt for Muammar Gaddafi would lead to peace and democratic government in Libya.
"In any case, we expect that peace will come to Libya. All those who govern the country today, representatives of various Libyan tribes, will be able to reach agreement on the configuration of the government, and Libya will become a modern and democratic state."
Russia, along with China, abstained in the UN Security Council vote which eventually authorized outside intervention in Libya.
