What makes a teacher? It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. Learning to read is probably the most difficult and revolutionary thing that happens to the human brain and if you don't believe that,watch an illiterate adult try to do it. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun,but then,if you are very lucky,you may find a real teacher. Three real teachers in a lifetime is the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second , a professor of creative writing at Stanford , and my third was my friend and partner, Ed Ricketts.
為師之道 　　 成年人常常會忘記在學校上學時的艱辛、單調(diào)和漫長。憑借記憶去學習必須了解的基本常識是一件最不可思議并需要不懈努力的事。學會閱讀大概是人的大腦活動中最困難的、最具創(chuàng)新性的一項任務。你如果不信的話，可以去觀察一個成年文盲的嘗試過程。上學不容易，而且大部分時光也確實枯燥無味。 但如果你很幸運的話，你會遇見一位優(yōu)秀的教師。我所遇到的三位真正的教師是我一生中最大的幸運：第一位是我在高中時任教的自然科學兼數(shù)學教師；第二位是斯坦福大學教創(chuàng)造性寫作的教授；最后一位是我的朋友,同時又是我的搭檔埃德·理克茨。
