In the early 1950's, British troops crushed the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya and held more than 80,000 captives.
Many were later released, including Jomo Kenyatta on August 21st, 1961. Two years later, the 73-year old Kenyatta was elected Kenya's first Prime Minister. One year after that, [--1--] from Britain and became a republic. Kenyatta had served a nine year term after being [--2--] by British authorities of managing the Mau Mau. The British also accused him of being Communist and anti-white, [--3--]. Kenyatta became a potent symbol for other African [--4--] leaders during the 1960s, when so many new African republics were established.
