This Day in History – On September 18th, 1961, Dad Hammerskjold died in a plane crash.
Secretary General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold was the son of a Swedish Prime Minister. The former [-----1-----] was first elected to the post in 1953. He was unanimously re-elected in 1957, after playing a strong hand in the Suez Crisis.Cold War tensions caused him to travel extensively. Hammerskjold [-----2-----] leaders in China, Russia and much of greater Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In 1960, the USSR demanded that Hammerskjold step down after he [-----3-----] U.N. troops to [-----4-----] in the Congo. Hammerskjold refused to resign, but flew to Rhodesia, hoping to negotiate a cease-fire. There his plane [-----5-----] exploded on September 18th, 1961.
