總總這些科學家的結(jié)局各不相同:歐文于1892年去世,比柯普或馬什早幾年。巴克蘭最后精神失常,成了個話都說不清的廢人,在克萊翰的一家精神病院里度過了最后的歲月,恰好就在離造成曼特爾終生殘疾的出事地點不太遠的地方。曼特爾那變了形的脊椎在二戰(zhàn)快結(jié)束時失蹤。而他的藏品被兒子沃爾特帶到了新西蘭保存,現(xiàn)捐獻給新西蘭博物館~~~

至于這個舞臺上的其他人物,歐文于1892年去世,比柯普或馬什早幾年。巴克蘭最后精神失常,成了個話都說不清的廢人,在克萊翰的一家精神病院里度過了最后的歲月,恰好就在離造成曼特爾終生殘疾的出事地點不太遠的地方。曼特爾那變了形的脊椎在亨特博物館展出了將近一個世紀,后來在二戰(zhàn)快結(jié)束時突襲倫敦的閃電戰(zhàn)中大慈大悲地被一枚炸彈擊中,不見了蹤影。曼特爾死后,剩下的收藏品傳給了他的子女,其中許多被他的兒子沃爾特帶到了新西蘭,他于1840年移居到那個國家。沃爾特成為一名杰出的新西蘭人,最后官至土著居民事務(wù)部部長。1865年,他把他父親收藏品中的主要標本,包括那顆著名的禽龍牙齒,捐贈給了惠靈頓的殖民博物館(就是現(xiàn)在的新西蘭博物館),此后一直存放在那里。而那顆引發(fā)這一切的禽龍牙齒--很可能是古生物學里最重要的牙齒--現(xiàn)在不再對外展出。
