Wetlands are one of the world's most important environmental assets. And throughout history they have been undergrown to human survival and development.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of The "Action Plan for Wetland Protection in China" put out in 2000, a contest was held to find the most beautiful wetland as part of a campaign to raise the awareness of wetlands protection in China.

Some call wetlands the "lungs of the earth", because they contain large concentrations of highly valuable plant and animal species. The activity, co-organized by Wetland International, People's Daily and China Economic Weekly Magazine, the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve and other organizations, judged five wetlands as the most beautiful in China.

The Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve was set up in 1992 to protect the largest wetland ecosystem in northern China. Situated in the northeast of Dongying City, Shandong Province, the nature reserve faces the Bohai Sea to the North and borders Laizhou Bay on the East. The reserve is home to more than 1,000 wild animal species among which number the famous red-crowned crane and the oriental white stork. It is one of the most important staging, wintering and breeding sites for birds migrating along the northeast Asia and west Pacific routes. The reserve is also the most extensive vegetation zone on China's coast and is home to 393 separate plant species.

As the year of wetlands, 2011 not only marks the 10th anniversary of the "Action Plan for Wetland Protection" but also the 40th anniversary of the Rasmar Convention on wetlands - which calls upon people to prevent wetland destruction.
