Colleges have opened their doors wider in recent years as the student population has increased enormously from 4 million in 1997 to nearly 14 million in 2006. Is this a good thing? Some believe that the enrollment increase will benefit individuals and the society as a whole. It allows more students to enjoy higher education and this may in return contribute to the overall improvement of the society. However, others express disapproval on it. They are afraid that some problems may arise from it. Firstly, the problem of unemployment. Secondly, the lower quality of education due to the limited higher education resources. In my opinion, I am inclined to agree with the former view. Admittedly, a rapid increase of graduates seemingly places a burden on the society. But in the long run, more and more educated people will eventually benefit the society. So, I am convinced that the admission expansion is a good thing.
