Doctors blame the development of superbugs in part on the misuse of antibiotics. When a child has the flu, a cold, a sore throat or an ear infection, concerned parents often ask for antibiotics to speed their child's recovery. But prescribing antibiotics may not be the best solution: For example, viruses that cause the flu and colds don't respond to antibiotics. When antibiotic treatment is necessary, doctors advise taking the entire course - not stopping early because one "feels better" - so the drugs can have their full effect.

Children aren't the only targets of superbugs. Health care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes commonly deal with all kinds of infectious diseases, including superbugs.

One drug-resistant strain of bacteria, called MRSA, can be spread by contaminated hands and medical equipment. It's reported to have caused approximately 18,500 deaths in 2005 in the United States. Recently, a newer strain of MRSA has been scaring people because it is spreading outside of hospitals in places such as schools, athletic facilities and jails.

Superbugs have the potential to bring medicine back to a time before antibiotics, when doctors couldn't successfully treat many serious diseases. However, by using antibiotics wisely, the general public can join scientists in the challenge to stop them.
