What do you do when confronted with a document that you find difficult to understand? I've been a doctor for 25 years and a surgeon for ten years so I very rarely have problems with medical documents. However, when I have to read political documents about the country I'm in, which is often the case as I travel to many war zones, I try to understand the gist. So, to do this I look quickly over the articles and take a few notes as I read. Do you sometimes wish you could read English better for your work or is your level sufficient to get by? I'm never really happy with my level but it's enough for my work. I think I have to accept it. I have application forms to read and fill out in English and these are a little more complicated as they don't use medical terms. How do you actively improve your English? If you don't is there a reason? Is your current level sufficient for your professional needs? At the moment I’m working a lot with Chinese and French people so I am reading a lot in French but soon I am going to Scotland and there I will read more in English. I find the more I read in a foreign language the easier it becomes because you start recognising more words. Basically I can manage in English but I never stop reading so I'm always learning.
如果碰到一篇你讀不太懂的文章你會(huì)怎么辦？ 我從醫(yī)有25年了，加上10年的外科醫(yī)生經(jīng)驗(yàn)，所以不太會(huì)碰到讀不懂的醫(yī)學(xué)文章。但是，因?yàn)槲倚枰氜D(zhuǎn)許多戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)地區(qū)，當(dāng)我需要閱讀所在國家相關(guān)的政治文章時(shí)，我就盡量去理解它的主旨。所以，我就會(huì)快速地瀏覽文章，并邊讀邊做筆記。 你有時(shí)候會(huì)不會(huì)因?yàn)楣ぷ餍枰?，希望能有更好的英文閱讀能力，或者說你覺得自己現(xiàn)在的水平已經(jīng)過得去了？ 我從來沒有滿足于我目前的水平，但是就工作要求來說已經(jīng)足夠了。這點(diǎn)我得承認(rèn)。我有些英文的申請(qǐng)表需要填寫，表格上沒有出現(xiàn)任何醫(yī)學(xué)術(shù)語，它們就比較復(fù)雜了。 你如何主動(dòng)提高你的英文水平？如果你沒那么做是出于什么原因呢？是不是因?yàn)槟隳壳暗乃揭呀?jīng)足夠應(yīng)付你的工作了？ 現(xiàn)在我在工作上經(jīng)常和中國人、法國人打交道，因此我讀了許多的法語文章。但是我馬上要去蘇格蘭了，在那里我會(huì)更多地使用英語。我發(fā)現(xiàn)用外語讀的文章越多，這個(gè)過程就會(huì)愈簡單，原因是你認(rèn)識(shí)了更多的新詞?；旧衔业挠⑽拈喿x水平?jīng)]什么大問題，但是我還在堅(jiān)持閱讀，因此我一直處在學(xué)習(xí)的過程中。
