The process of selecting new sports means Olympics have come to include some very distinctive activities. While some sports have antient roots, others were not considered sports until fairly recently.

Modern pentathlon
Some sports were invented specifically for the Olympics.One example is the modern pentathlon. The sport was inspired by the story of a French soilder who was ordered to deliver a message. The messenger had to ride a horse, shoot at the enemy,and duel with a sword. Then he had to swim across a river before running to deliver the message. Today, like the solider in the story, modern pentathletes compete in riding, shooting, fencing, swimming and running. Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, introducing this sport in 1912.

Archery
Archery disappeared the from Olympics only to return years later. It was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, but then it was neglected until 1972. Archery is a challenging sport that requires archers to shoot arrows at targets look smaller than coins.
