If you haven't made your travel plans for the summer yet, one destination which might have to wait for a little while is London. As the London Olympics are moving closer, more and more tourists and sport fans from around the world are starting their journey to Britain. And that has led to sky-rocketing travel costs to the country.
In travel agencies in China, customers are even being advised to skip the summer period and wait for a cheaper season starting in September.
Local travel agencies still offer their Olympic tours to Great Britain. Other than the routine tourist programs, these packages include tickets to the Olympic Games. They have been selling like hotcakes. Especially popular among the Chinese audience were tickets to diving and table tennis games.
Zhang Rui, vice president of Caissa Travel Agency said, "A tour which includes one sports game is priced at twenty to thirty thousand yuan. If you want to watch three or four games, It costs sixty to seventy thousand."
But some agencies have decided to organize less tours to the UK now because of the exploding costs. They even tell customers to wait until the Olympics are over.
Ge Lei, general manager for marketing, China Youth Travel Service, said, "Unless you’re a sports fan, we’d suggest you wait. After the Games, travel prices will drop by 70%. And there will more options available in accommodation and air tickets."
A usual group tour to the UK costs around twenty thousand yuan or more than 3000 US dollars per person. In the June to August period this year, the price is three to four times the usual. Travel agents advice tourists to wait until September when the prices come back to normal.
