The thick haze that had shrouded China's central and eastern provinces has started to clear. Traffic in the affected provinces has started to resume.

In Hubei province’s capital, Wuhan, the visibility was higher Tuesday than it was 2 days ago. Road traffic and ferry services have resumed. The local government lifted the yellow warning issued on Monday.

The provincial Environment Protection Department says they have investigated the cause for the heavy fog, and have ruled out industrial pollution. They believe the most likely reason was the burning of straw in neighboring provinces.
In the east, Zhejiang and Jiangsu were also affected by the heavy for. In Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, flights had been canceled. The rush-hour traffic was worsened by low visibility. The for spread to as far as Shandong province. Analysts from the National Meteorological Centre say the fog is mostly a form of radiation fog.

Ma Xuekuan, chief weatherman of National Meteorological Center, said, "The heavy fog in these places is mostly from the high relative humidity in near-surface air. Minor rainfalls in the past few days, coupled with calm winds, have contributed to the stable stratification of the air. And rapid cooling during the night sped up thesaturation of the atmospheric relative humidity, thus causing smog and haze."

According to the weather forecast, the fog is likely to continue in these regions over the next two days. However, a cold wave is expected to clear out the haze around Friday.
