I was already in my late twenties at that time. Confucius, an ancient Chinese sage, said, "At the age of thirty, one should achieve self-reliance." So what was I to do when I could not even support myself? To hold on, or to give up my dream to be a film director? Fortunately, my wife offered me the most timely encouragement.

My wife and I went to the same university, but she was a biology major. After graduation, she worked as a medical researcher at a small local research institute with only a meagre income. By then, we had already had our first son, Haan Lee. Hence, to relieve my guilty conscience, apart from reading, watching films and writing scripts at home all day long, I offered to take on all the housework — from grocery shopping, cooking to taking care of the child — and kept our house clean and tidy. I can still recall those days when I would sit in the doorway together with son at dusk after getting supper ready, telling him stories while looking forward to "the brave mother hunter bringing back home her spoils (living expenses)."??

And at that time, we already had our elder son, Haan Lee, to raise. To relieve me of guilt, I took on all the housework – cleaning, cooking and taking care of our son – in addition to reading books, reviewing films and writing scripts. Every evening, after preparing supper, I would sit on the front steps with Haan, telling him stories as we waited for his mother – the heroic huntress – to come home with her prey (her income).
