查理·卓別林（Charlie Chaplin，1889－1977）出生在英國倫敦的一個貧民區(qū)里，他的父母是音樂廳的演員。由于父親早亡，母親精神失常，他被迫流浪街頭。14歲那年，卓別林加入流動劇團，跑遍了英國各個角落。19歲時，他當(dāng)上了一個著名劇團的演員，并隨團到歐洲、美國等地演出。1913年他到了美國，開始從事電影事業(yè)，并于1914年在影片《威尼斯賽車記》中創(chuàng)造了一個悲劇小人物“夏爾洛”，從此這個有特別裝束的流浪漢形象風(fēng)行世界70年，經(jīng)久不衰。

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London, on April 16th 1889. His father was a versatile vocalist and actor; and his mother, known under the stage name of Lily Harley, was an attractive actress and singer, who gained a reputation for her work in the light opera field. Having inherited natural talents from their parents, the youngsters took to the stage as the best opportunity for a career.

When he was about twelve, he got his first chance to act in a legitimate stage show, and appeared as "Billy" the page boy, in support of William Gillette in "Sherlock Holmes". At the close of this engagement, Charlie started a career as a comedian in vaudeville, which eventually took him to the United States in 1910 as a featured player.

Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from a child in the Victorian era to close to his death at the age of 88, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.

卓別林在電影中滑稽搞笑，在走出銀幕后同樣也風(fēng)趣幽默。他那代表性的著裝竟然最初都是從化妝間借別人搭配而成的；而與他人書信來往時也不忘展現(xiàn)其幽默細胞。

裝束來歷：卓別林的獨特裝束誕生于1914年。當(dāng)時有位導(dǎo)演麥克·塞納特要拍一部喜劇片《威尼斯賽車記》，需要有一套看上去很滑稽的服裝。卓別林根據(jù)導(dǎo)演的意思，在化妝間里，從一個胖子的身上借來褲子，從一個瘦子身上借來上衣。胡子是剪了別人的頭發(fā)。禮帽是一個人的父親的。選了一個特大號的鞋，穿著不跟腳，就左右腳換穿，又搖著手仗，引起所有人的大笑。當(dāng)時他就決定，以后不管演什么戲，都永遠穿這套裝束。

和愛因斯坦的有趣通信：世人都知道大科學(xué)家愛因斯坦會拉小提琴，而且是個左撇子，卻鮮有人知其實卓別林也愛拉小提琴，并且同樣是個左撇子。他倆有著深厚的友誼。愛因斯坦非常推崇卓別林的電影。在卓別林還沒成大明星時，他在給卓別林的一封信中寫道：“你的電影《摩登時代》，世界上的每一個人都能看懂。你一定會成為一個偉人?！倍縿e林在回信中寫道：“我更加欽佩你。你的相對論世界上沒有人能弄懂，但是你已經(jīng)成為一個偉人。”大師間的對話充滿了機趣。

Partly based on Charlie Chaplin's My Autobiography, this humorous and dramatic biopic features an all-star cast including Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr. and Chaplin's real-life daughter, Geraldine Chaplin, who portrays his mentally ill mother.

Highlighted works such as The Gold Rush (1925) and The Great Dictator (1940) illustrate significant turning points in Chaplin's prolific filmography. Director Richard Attenborough's film also explores the circumstances surrounding Chaplin's exile from America and his eventual return to receive an honorary Academy Award.
