Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons wins 2013 Nobel peace prize.

Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, currently working to destroy Syria's stock, is announced as winner.

The reasons for the award show the committee see Syria as an important part of the reason for giving the award to the OPCW, but by no means the only one. The key phrase is:"Recent events in Syria, where chemical weapons have again been put to use, have underlined the need to enhance the efforts to do away with such weapons."

It's something of an insurance clause for the committee – if efforts in Syria fail they can point to the wider need to eliminate chemical munitions.
