Sam was dredging the drainage ditch behind the town dump when the downpour began. There were only a couple of small droplets at first, but then the rain really began to fall. He smiled as he hoped that the drought would now be over -- they were long due for some rain. He put down his shovel and drill and happily escaped the drudgery of his work to the shed on the hill. Inside he shut the door and sat down to relax. Not paying attention to the draft coming in through the walls, Sam's thoughts began to drift. It was a dubious job, cleaning ditches, but he had accepted the dramatic change in lifestyle quite easily. He had never been happy in the corporate world. And he had taken the loss of his job because of downsizing quite hard at first. But then he had accepted the downturn to see what life still had to offer.
