Martin Freeman has spoken to Digital Spy about the shocking events of Fargo episode one.

The blackly comic series opener saw Lester Nygaard (Freeman) murder his nagging wife following an encounter with dangerous drifter Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton).

"I like the fact that it's a surprise - you don't see it coming!" the actor said. "Certainly the Lester that you meet at the beginning... you never have him down as someone who's going to do something as f**king violent as that by the end of it.

Following his dark deeds, Lester will become more of "an operator" as the series unfolds, Freeman explained.

"At first, Lester's a hunted animal and he has to react to survive," he said. "But as the series goes on, you see that he starts to enjoy it - he actually is getting better at it."
