With the World Cup semifinals upon us, Shanghai's male soccer nuts are glued to their screens, making their other halves feel somewhat neglected. In response, a group of 12 women in Shanghai formed an “Anti-World Cup Union” and paraded about the city, bearing banners and sporting slogans on their bodies to voice their discontent.
This group of women protested outside of Century Avenue Station, People’s Park and Metro-City in Shanghai, bearing banners reading “World Cup, give me back my boyfriend’ along with signs with various complaining "slogans", including “Don’t use your World Cup to challenge my E cup”, “Don’t pull me to commit suicide when the team lost”, “Those men who discuss football at the workplace all look like a sissy”, “Housewives ≠ scorned wife” and “I need to give birth to baby! Where are you, husband?”.
Some netizens said that these women only wanted to be (internet) famous, while others criticized them for being unreasonable and quarrelsome. Some male football fans said that the complaint was unfair. “ Have you (women) thought about men’s feeling when you force me to watch Korean dramas or variety shows?,” they said.
It was reported that the women’s other halves ignored both them and their families during the World Cup. One protestor was a pregnant woman who was angry because she was forced to take her pregnancy examination alone as her husband was only focused on the games. Some men even gambled away their family's life savings.
During their protests, some passers-by signed "the Union's" banners to show their support. However soccer fans didn't follow suit.
This isn't the first time women voiced their discontent about their significant others' WC addictions. At the start of the tournament, a group of Xiangyang women protested (and got a lot of attention) by throwing their bras in the air.
