美國獨(dú)立戰(zhàn)爭期間，樹木大多用來生火，曼哈頓街道上樹木貧乏，因而華爾街68號(hào)院這棵尚存的梧桐樹(Buttonwood)就格外引人注目，樹陰下成了良好的集會(huì)場所。1792年5月17日，24個(gè)經(jīng)紀(jì)人在樹下召開會(huì)議，達(dá)成一項(xiàng)協(xié)定，協(xié)議具有中世紀(jì)行業(yè)協(xié)議的性質(zhì)，它規(guī)定24個(gè)簽約者進(jìn)行債券買賣時(shí)，彼此間享有優(yōu)惠，以統(tǒng)一、固定的比率提取傭金。
