A blanket of toxic grey smog
descended on much of Britain yesterday, raising fears for the health of the sick and elderly.
Landmarks such as Durham Cathedral appeared shrouded in a ghostly pall after pollution hit dangerous levels.
Experts warned chemicals and ultra-fine
sooty particles in the air could cause fatal
asthma attacks or heart problems. They advised the elderly not to exert themselves outdoors and told people to stay away from main roads.

The problem started earlier this week when a cloud of polluted air was blown over from factories in Holland and Belgium. It grew far more serious when the wind stopped blowing and fumes from UK vehicles added to the smog.
Increased amounts of toxic gases such as nitrogen dioxide mean there is a lower concentration of oxygen in the air we breathe, said Royal Meteorological Society chief executive Liz Bentley. Fresh wind is expected to clear the air by the end of today, but it is thought that a haze could remain.?
@Ross39
Thanks a lot France.
@UKIP ARE COMING
Leave the EU, that's a plan we can all applaud!
@Nogs
I deal with toxic smog every morning. My Girlfriends farts!
