The Martian isn't Ridley Scott's first space rodeo. He's the guy behind Alien and Blade Runner, two of the most influential and beloved sci-fi films ever made. As we know from his upcoming slate he's not done with either ground-breaking universe, so it's no surprise there's a little easter egg to one of those masterpieces in here.

1. The Alien-Style Opening

The music used for the opening of The Martian has several bars that seem to be mimicking Alien's own opening – silent screeches with the hint of orchestration. Coupled with the title appearing against an areal shot of the planet, just like Alien's apparating text.

2. The 2001 Parallel

While the music over the film's opening is a clear shout-out to Alien, the framing of the opening shot is actually reaching further back in cinematic history.That whole “title appearing over a shot of a planet as the sun peeks round”, used by Ridley Scott in both Alien and The Martian, is actually a homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

While stranded on Mars, Mark Watney's not exactly got the widest selection of entertainment. All he's got to work to is Commander Lewis' collection of disco music, leading to the likes of Waterloo and Starman. Mark's seen multiple times watching Happy Days, even letting it influence his pose in his first image sent back to Earth.

OK, now for one that's a little more tongue-in-cheek and likely stems from an actor's style rather than anything intentional on Ridley's part, but is still so humorous and it’s silly to not mention.

5. The Best Lord Of The Rings Joke EVER

The Martian's belly-laugh. A reference so awesome it threatens to overshadow the brilliance of the rest of the movie. This is a homage to the The Council of Elrond from The Lord Of The Rings. And so we get a scene where Sean Bean, who obviously played Boromir in the film version of that exact scene, must explain the whole idea of the Fellowship. If your screening didn’t erupt in a wave of cheers then something was seriously wrong with that audience.

More so than any other movie in, well, ever. Cast Away, Gravity, Interstellar, even Prometheus; there's elements of them all in here. But perhaps the biggest comparison point is Apollo 13. This isn’t that surprising given author Andy Weir’s history in science.

To get off Mars, Mark puts his life totally in the hands of Michael Martinez, who is going to remotely pilot the Ares IV launch model into space. Before it all kicks off, Mark makes one simple request – don't do a barrel role.

The Martian is set in 2035, so by this point the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around for almost three decades and Iron Man is a movie with as much of a cultural stamp as Star Wars has now. This is quite an important piece of context to getting the full extent of when, in the final stages of the escape, Mark suggests cutting his own suit to fly to the Hermes so he can “be like Iron Man”.
