With his estimate of the distance between the department door and the team leader's office door, Doug figured he could afford five seconds. If the cap bottle could not be found within these few seconds, he was getting out regardless. In this short duration, Doug listened attentively for the opening of the department door. Although there was quite a distance in between, because of the stillness of the surrounding, even a slight sound carried an each and could be heard fairly well.
