The childhood sweethearts, D-Day veteran Roy Vickerman, 90, and his bride-to-be Nora Jackson, 89, are now set to marry, 72 years after Roy first proposed in 1944.

The couple first met in 1940 at school in Staffordshire. They fell in love and got engaged in 1944, both aged 18, a week before Roy went to fight in the D-Day Landings in Normandy.

Roy was later shot during the Allied Invasion of Germany in 1945 and the shell-shock he suffered on his return to England eventually led to the breakdown of his relationship with Nora.

They both moved on with their lives and went on to marry and have children, followed by grandchildren, although they both sadly lost their partners in later years.

Nora didn’t think she’d ever see Roy again, but she still thought of him occasionally. And, 70 years later, Roy tracked his childhood sweetheart down. After he called the BBC Midlands radio show ‘Late Night Love’, to tell their wartime story.

Not knowing whether Nora was married or not, Roy simply planned to give her a bunch of flowers, apologise for the way their romance ended.

A year on, Roy proposed to Nora for a second time, during his 90th birthday celebrations. They’re now planning a summer wedding.
