Once powerful, Hurricane Rick lost most of its punch while heading toward the country's resorts on Tuesday, but local authorities are still preparing for evacuations due to flooding.

Authorities in Los Cabos, say seven shelters will be opened at schools, for people in low-lying neighborhoods, in case of heavy rains and possible floods.

Officials will also urge residents living in makeshift homes, and those staying in flood zones, to seek shelter.

Rick was the second strongest storm to hit the eastern reaches of the North Pacific, since experts began keeping reliable records in 1966.

Even before Rick neared Mexico's western peninsula, its powerful surf claimed two lives.
